Does all red ink have nickel in it? I was told by the tattoo artist that if I can't wear inexpensive jewelry I should not use red ink in a tattoo. I can not. Whatever metal or whatever is in the ink would cause the same reaction I get to inexpensive jewelry. That would cause a problem. She will not use it on me. Would this be the same for pink or orange or any color with any amount of red in it? Someone else who has had numerous tattoos told me they never heard of that and she reacts to inexpensive jewelry."

My response:

I'd trust the tattoo artist over someone who has numerous tattoos, since she is more likely to know the composition of the ink and whether or not clients have had trouble with a color.

Some reds contain iron, some contain toxic metals such as cadmium or mercury. There is an organic red that causes fewer reactions than the metal-based reds. Red ink is well-known for causing sensitivity reactions. The more dilute the pigment, like in orange or pink, the lower the chance of a reaction, but I would say the risk is still present.
I got a tattoo on a low-circulation area (my thumb) and developed a granulomatic reaction to the ink. The tattoo artist had assured me that all of her inks were organic after i presented her with my inflamed thumb. Once i finally got the brand name of ink she used, i found the brown mix she had used on me was actually an inorganic red base, and the company warned of the nickel content on their website.

My response to them: If you don’t trust your tattoo artist, don’t get the tattoo. But if she is making suggestions that aren’t straight up directing you towards just giving your money and going on your way, then i would have to say that she sounds like a pretty good bet. If you’re still worried, though, research the ink, and perhaps request a different type if you’re worried. I learned the hard way, and after a year of steroid treatment, my reactive tattoo is very ugly.
As a tattoo artist, I would say don’t always trust every tattoo artist to know everything. There are some people who stumbled into their carreers in this field and don’t know much about technique let alone the chemical compositions of the inks they use.

Having said that, I find very few people are allergic to pigments, but the ones who are are often allergic to red. These people are often allergic to other things containing red such as licorice, red candy, etc. I’ve had a dermatologist explain it to me as the phenol thaylene content in red pigments. Some people have just a mild reaction such as small bumps and redness; others will have the red in the tattoo scab violently and their body will actually push the pigment out over the long healing process. I’ve seen this happen and the tattoo might look perfectly fine except all the red is gone! Anyway, even a pretty well informed tattoo artist might not know the chemical breakdown of all their inks. So know what things you are allergic to before getting the tattoo, or let the artist know before you plan to go ahead.
Are there any treatments available to someone who has had a red ink reaction?. i recently got some work done an the red seems to be reacting. i had had a small patch react previously in the pink ink not red. and it has basically left the skin dead an with like little blackheads in it. but now i have a large area of red that 2 weeks later seems to be like a rash. is there anything i can do now to fix it. before it goes dead an scars like the other small bit i have. Cheers
I had a severe allergic reaction to the red ink in my tattoo. It started to raise, and was very itchy. I got my tattoo in February and by June I had to see a doctor. He looked at it and really wasnt sure what he could do so he sent me to a dermatologist. It was so raised at that point it was kind of embarrassing and the itching was unbearable. I saw him in September and he removed the smaller hearts of the tattoo and sent them to the lab (that is standard procedure). Well a week later they called me with the results. The severe allergy to the mercury in the red ink had actually caused it to turn into squamous cell carcinoma!! So I went in later that week and had the rest of the red ink cut out. I did a lot of research and I found out that exposure to high amounts of mercury can cause cancer. I wish I had known before I had it done, I would have chosen a different color. I do plan on having my tattoo fixed (without the red ink of course) but I have told everyone I know that has red ink tattoos or is planning on having red in a tattoo to please be cautious. You can have the tattoo artist do a sample test and just be patient. It would be much better to have a small red dot removed than to have part of the tattoo cut out once it is too late. It took less than a year (8 months to be exact) to go from my beautiful tattoo to cancer, leaving me with half of a tattoo.
In my practice I have had one reported issue with “red reaction” and it was not with the client with the metal allergy that I expected t would be. I have a repeat customer who has a known allergy to any non exotic type metal touching his skin and I did a half back piece of a color spiderman that had no reaction at all. Go figure.
I got a tattoo on my foot 2 1/2 weeks ago and immediately after I got it my foot started swelling. The swelling has gone down but the area with the red ink looks like a scar. The parts with green and blue ink are fine. The lines where the red ink are have tripled in size and are flat and shiny. Does this sound like a red ink reaction?
I had a tatoo done about 3 weeks ago. The day after I got my tattoo my foot was extremely swolen but some people told me that it was normal while other said it wasnt, so i decided to wait. Well the swelling kept going down but the tattoo was not looking healed and pretty. The areas that had red ink had turned hard and bumpy. I finally researched and found out about the red reaction. I decided to start using Mederma and it is working wonderfully. I saw a difference in just 2 days. I would tell anyone to go to the Doctor first (even though I did not go myself) and use Mederma 3 to 4 time a day until the tattoo is completely healed.
I recently had a tat done on my calf. Most of the tattoo was black with a portion of it red. All the black is fine but the red is f-up. My skin actually will not heal in that area until it pushes all the red ink out of my pores. I have a dilema as to get it re-done in red or just re-do it in black. I already have one tat mostly black no color with no side effects. Both tats were done by different artists. I’m trying to find out if I can purchase Zap Organic Ink or something similar to that product. Any suggestions out there would be appreciated.
i recently had a tattoo done , and its f’d up along with my whole arm..all the blacks healed fin and there are a few red parts but have , scabbed really bad, have become a nasty leather look, ink has toned down, and it is lumpy and raised. i have no idea what to do with this, each part of the red is raised and feels like a bruise.is there anything that will help this go back to normal and flat? and when and if it doe’s go flat is it ok to go over it with a different color and not have the same reaction?
(10) Dan says:

Come on people!!! Jeez. By all means trust your tattooist, at least your’s has warned you first, but it really isn’t so bad.

Best is to ask the tattooist what pigment their red ink is based on. Typically this will be cinnabar, which is the most likely cause of such skin reactions.
You can google what other colour pigments are used to create red ink, some are less likely to cause the problem.

I have numerous tattoos, all with red, only one of which gave me any problems.
The problem will generally mean it will just itch and be a little painful. Others may find it makes the area a little flaky (but that’s alright, it’s only us flakey hippy types who get tattoos anyway, right? ;-)
I know other people who have also had reactions. My tattooist, unfortunately, didnt tell me about this until afterwards… He did say, however, which I can confirm for both myself and friends who have had a problem, the problem WILL go away, it’s not a permanent thing. Granted, this could take months. Mine was tender, shall we say, for nearly 6 months. Then it was fine, and still is.

So, all in all, it really isn’t that much to worry about. If you can stand the ‘pain’ of a tattoo in the first place, you can damn well handle the slight side effect the red ink may cause. Equally, if you have picked a tattoo and it has red in it, you’d be a fool to change that colour based on this!! You have to like your tattoo, it’s there forever!

My tattoo that reacted is on my calf and has a large solid red area. If you have smaller areas, or just faint red shading and alike, you’re also less likely to have a reaction.
Mine, I have to say, was so bad, it seemed to affect my muscle, as I couldn’t put any weight on that leg for several days. I woke up the day after the tattoo, got out of bed and my leg just gave way… I suppose after all I have said above this makes it sound altogether worse, but maybe I’m just a pussy. ;-)

In short, if you want red in your tattoo, get red in your tattoo!!! If you don’t want to risk it, don;t get the tattoo.
If your that concerned, maybe tattoos just arent for you. I’ve seen some pretty sweet rub-ons in gum packets. Or henna, if you’re a girl or a less masculine male. ;-)

Best of luck with it anyway.
I have the same problem on my back and all you need to do is ask the derm. Doctor to see if he can try steriod treamont it takes all the red out..or you can try a pain process and have an artist run the machine with dilute alcohol with water its painful but it works all u have to do is wait for when the tatt goes down cause I’m sure it goes up and down and when its down you do it.you might need to do it twice for it to work but it does.the reason its raised is because the body is trying to push it out(rejecting it)and opening up the skin alil will help it get pushed out
Mine is over 5 years old, it’s not raised any more, but it is constantly itchy. The dermatologist was no help at all, refered me to a surgeon, they would not even see me, “we don’t do that any mors” was the answer I got fron 3 different ones. I don’t know what to do….
Ok this is somewhat a strange question but have to ask. I bought some ink for a local tattoo shop I’ve purchased things from before. Anyway one of the colors I have used on 3 people including myself and we have ALL had the same exact reaction. Swelling, redness, itching severly. In my case it Will NOT heal properly BUT ONLY Where this shade or Orangish red was used. Its The Dynamic brand ink. I’ve never had this happen before NEVER. Until using this ink. I asked the Shop I bought the ink from I was told the tattoo was worked too hard, However it happened when I did the tattoo and when My husband did mine. and ONLY this one color. Is it possible to have gotten som e bad ink? I asked him this and he said no way. My husband worked in a shop for several years and said the bottle might not of been sterile when he put the ink in?
I have 7 tattoo pieces on different parts of my body. All different colors and a few different artists. I haves red star on my foot (5 other color stars too) and a red heart on my back that have reacted very badly. Unlike most people, mine didn’t react until 3 & 4 years after I had them inked on my body. I also have a dab of orange that is starting to raise up recently I’ve seen the doctor who put me on some terrible meds that I had a bad reaction to. Now I’m just waiting to see a dermatologist. The doctor doesn’t think I’m allergic to the red ink since I had the reactions years after they were put on me.
mine started several months after and i’ve still got it now. i was advised by another tattooist that the only cure is to have lazer treatment to remove some ink. i cant afford that so i am gonna try the dry needle to see if that helps. mine is being weird, i have little white bits under the skin which sometimes come out and leave a tiny hole. its not nice at all.
Now, 49 years later…. here I am looking online to see why the red parts of these 2 images are itching, and the really red spot on one of them is getting raised…..probably from the scratching the skin when I’m asleep. Not a big deal, and one poster remarked (Mindi?) that it could be due to physical body changes….at my age, it’s always changing…In only 25 years, I’ll be a hundred…..cheers, barney
I have 4 tattoos. The first red cherries 15 yrs old. The 2nd is a band of red roses about 10 yrs old. 3rd is bouquet of flowers 3 yrs old and my newest one is on my whole right calf 1 yr old. About 3 months ago I developed the “red ink” allergy on my leg then on my 3rd tat and now on my 10 and 15 yr old tattoos. How come its all of a sudden after so many years have past? What is bio oil and where do I get it? Can anyone recommend a remedy? Email me at hummzz@yahoo.com please.
I got my first red tattoo done just 5 days ago on my ankle. I knew something was wrong, but my first thought was that it must have gotten infected… so I went to the Dr. Luckily, it’s not. After talking to my tattoo artist and reading everyone’s posts, I can say that I def. have an allergic reaction to the red ink. I would have never, ever thought this would happen to me. I have never had an allegic reaction to anything and I don’t have sensitive skin. So far, the pain is alomst gone but what is left is not what I wanted out of a tattoo. It looks badly scabbed and bumpy. I am hoping that with time it will look better and I will keep posting about the progress. Everyone’s posts have been so helpful! Thanks!
I bought the Bio Oil on Friday…today is Monday and I’ve used it all weekend and I can see a tremendous difference! The peeling is virtually gone. The itching has subsided and the raising of the skin is already going down! I’m so pleased to the guy that put the post up about Bio Oil! I found it at Walgreens. 4 oz for $14.99 on sale! I’d pay more! Its totally worth it!!!!
I have 10 tattooes and I cannot wear nickel jewellery at all, I had to have a pair of earrings cut out of my ears in the emergency room once. But I have several large areas of tattooing that are various shades of red and have never had a reaction to red tattoo ink, and I’ve had them done at several different places so the inks would all be different in composition so I’m not sure how closely related the nickel issue is.
I have had two tattoos, one on each forearm for almost 20 years. They have both been fine up until about two months ago. Now the red is raised, it’s like they are 3D. It seems strange to me that this would happen to tattoos that are 20 years old.
I got my tattoo done june 2009. Almost a year later i got allergic reaction to red ink (raised skin, terrible itching, burning). I’ve been getting steroid injections monthly for over 6 mos. It helped to make the swelling and inflammation go down, but then it just comes back again. The dermatologist said there is nothing else he can do and I’d have to get it removed. Just saw MD for tattoo removal. I had one laser treatment and it flared back up again really bad. It has been a true nightmare for me.
(32) Carrie says:

I’m having the same kind of reaction. Got my tattoo in February 2010 and now a year and a half later, it’s only gotten worse. I’ve tried the steriod cream, injections, a holisitic approach (which costs a lot of money including Wormwart, Flax Seed Oil, and CalAmo) and consulted with a Tattoo removal specialist. She warned against removing it since it will spread internally to the whole body.
Nothing has helped, at this point, I wonder about a skin graph.
So many bad tattoos, so little time. This week on America's Worst Tattoos we'll see a drug tat, a homemade prayer tattoo, and possibly one of the ugliest tattoos of all time.

Michelle's covered in tattoos, but the one that bothers her is one she did herself -- it's supposed to be of herself praying. Michelle hates the tattoo, but likes tattoo artist Adam. Could there be a tattoo love connection? It might depend on how well Adam transforms her prayer tattoo into some kind of abstract tattoo design.

Stand up comedian Rich has a tattoo mess on his arm -- a combination of about four different tattoo artists, it's tribal, traditional, one part Statue of Liberty and another part Japanese. In short, it's all over the place. Megan Massacre is going to try to create a traditional rose tat over top his complicated design. Check out her finished product below!

Tattoo2_041313

Kris had a bad trip with a tattoo artist on an acid trip. The result is a weird, abstract mess of lines on his side. It's supposed to be a biomechanical tat, but it's nowhere near what it should be. Note to self: Never get a tattoo from a guy on three hits of acid. Tattooist Tim is happy to help him out, and creates a gorgeous sugar skull and rose design.

Tattoo3_041313

Don regrets his past pot-smoking ways, and totally regrets his pot tattoo. The worst part is, it doesn't even look like weed. It looks more like a pile of poop, really. "Don't do drugs!" warns Don, and don't get tattoos of drugs, either. Megan Massacre's going to put a scary zombie face over it. Which is only slightly less questionable.

Tattoo4_041313

But while that's happening, let's pause for Anthony, with possible the worst tattoo ever:

Emi grew up in a house where tattoos were no nos. So when she turned 21, she went tattoo-crazy. But one jester tattoo in particular turned out to be a big mistake. It's faded, and crappy, and now she's hoping that Tim can fix it up. Emi has a sketch of a mummy girl with kitty cats, and she tells Tim to go crazy with it.

Tatto5_041313

Emi's crappy tattoo is nothing though, compared to Daniel's bizarre devil woman lifting dumbbells that don't look like, well, dumbbells. It's not for public consumption. "I don't want to get slapped by grandmas anymore! I need to get this covered up!" Even tattoo artist Jeremy Swan thinks it's going to go down as one of the worst tattoos in history. But thankfully, he's able to cook up a gorgeous raven and skull design to cover up the nastiness.

Who had the worst tattoo this week? And the best cover up? Tell us in the comments!
If you want to be a tattoo artist, there are some things you need to
know. All tattoo artists are not created equal and you will never make
it amongst them if you don’t have the right skills to compete. This
article is intended to be very straightforward and will not coddle you
in any way. So, if you want someone to tell you that you that anyone can
make it in this business as long as they have the desire, you are in
the wrong place. If you really want to know what it takes to make it in the tattoo world, keep reading.
Money & Fame
First of all, let’s talk about money. Tattooing is big business and a
lot of the more popular artists are making a killing at it. Some of them
have so many people knocking at their door that they have had to resort
to creating a waiting list weeks, months, or even years in advance.
Customers are lined up and willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a few
hours work. Sure sounds like tattooing is a get-rich-quick dream,
doesn’t it? Well, snap back to reality because you are only seeing one
tiny part of the big picture. First of all, the ones making a killing
versus the ones working just as hard and barely making ends meet is a
very high ratio. Secondly, there is a lot of money that has to be
invested into running a successful, safe, clean, sterile and
professional tattooing business.
Artists are in high demand because their patrons know they can be
trusted for cleanliness as well as quality artwork. One autoclave
sterilizer can cost thousands of dollars. High quality tattoo machines,
power supplies, medical equipment and sanitation supplies also add up
significantly. And then there’s insurance, licenses and other legal red
tape that can break the bank before you even get started. So, if you’re
in this for the money, you’re going to be very disappointed. Not to
mention the fact that anyone that starts any new career or business
purely money-motivated has already set themselves up for disaster. If
you do not love, and I do mean love, the art of tattooing and would not be willing to do it for free, then don’t waste your time even trying to get in.
The desire for fame is just as ridiculous a motivation for becoming a
tattoo artist as money is. Yes, there are a few people in the tattoo
community that are considered famous and we find ourselves gushing at
the thought of meeting them or being tattooed by them simply because of
who they are. Well, trust me – they didn’t get into this business for
the purpose of fame, either, and the reason it happened upon them is
because they EARNED it. They worked their asses off, dedicating every
drop of sweat to the art and they eventually got recognized for it
because of that dedication. Someone looking purely for an ego boost
isn’t going to be willing to put forth that much effort, so it would be
best for them to go try to find their 15 minutes on a reality TV show.
Perhaps sensing that I have neither read
the book or watched the original, Sony Pictures has released 18
character images and biographies to help myself and those like me get
acquainted with David Fincher’s upcoming adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Starring Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Stellan
Skarsgård, Robin Wright, and Joley Richardson, the pic centers on
Lisbeth Salander’s (Mara) investigation into the Vanger family alongside
journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig).

Check out each of the character images and biographies after the jump. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo hits theaters later this year on December 21st.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the
first film in Columbia Pictures’ three-picture adaptation of Stieg
Larsson’s literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy. Directed by
David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, the film is
based on the first novel in the trilogy, which altogether have sold 50
million copies in 46 countries and become a worldwide phenomenon. The
screenplay is by Steven Zaillian.

Let’s meet 24-year-old Shayanna Janelle Jenkins, she happens to be girlfriend/fiancée of 23-year-old football player Aaron Hernandez. Jenkins man is a tight end for the New England Pats and the couple has been engaged as of November of 2012. Shayanna the eldest daughter of Jodi Jenkins from Bristol, CT has two sister Ontavia and Shaneah Jenkins (check her here) who allegedly was dating Odin Lloyd, the man found shot to death close to Aaron and Shayanna’s home.

That was also around the time when Shayanna “Shay” and Aaron welcomed their first baby and became parents to beautiful baby daughter, Avielle Janelle Hernandez, born on November 6, 2012! Which happens to be the same exact date of Aaron’s birthday. Parent and child sharing the same special day?! Isn’t that just the cutest thing? He even missed a game to be with his lovely girl and new bundle of joy!

Although his bad boy look makes him seem like a gangster from a rap video; in fact fatherhood is just something very meaningful for the young dad! We know him for talent but Shay’s boyfriend also likes to keep his reflections and life lessons tattooed to his skin. If it is to be, it is up to me, reads a large tattoo on his left forearm, a favorite saying of his late father, Dennis. Hernandez gave an interview around the time his daughter was born and addressed how he thought his behavior had to change:

Now, another one is looking up to me. I can’t just be young and reckless Aaron no more. I’m gonna try to do the right things, become a good father.

I’m sure Shay felt very proud of him right there hearing those words! Their story goes back to their high school years! Shayanna met the father of her daughter Aaron who is of Puerto Rican descent back in high school; they both graduated in 2007 from Bristol Central High School being high school sweethearts. She’s been there for him since his college football days while he played for the University of Florida.

The couple seems to be somehow involved in the investigation of a dead man who was found near Shay’s home with the NFL player but so far neither have been declared as suspects. The couple currently resides in North Attleboro, MA along with their baby girl.
Meredith blogs at Pile of Babies: Take a Knee, I Have Nonsense to Spew. She also has a political humor blog at The Politicus, is a contributor at Imperfect Parent, writes movie reviews for Reckless Video, and has been published at Errant Parent and The Yellow Ham. Mama likey to writey.
.

My friends and I talk a lot about how we are going to parent our kids when they are teenagers. Yes, they are only 4 now. No, I do not believe we are over-preparing. We’re talking about teenagers here, people. It’s kill or be killed.

Typically, these conversations turn to the awful, terrible, idiotic things we did when we were teenagers. What would have been a fun get-to-know-you-better conversation before kids has turned into a sobering, head-shaking, aw-shit-mine-better-not kind of talk.

I did it all — drugs, alcohol, sex, riding on the roof of a car with a friend while the guys inside held our hands through the sunroof to keep us from falling off…………actually, it was more ME holding on to THEIR hands while THEY BOTH held on to my super hot friend. Ouch. I engaged in a fair share of risky behavior and somehow managed to stay alive. All the serial killers must have been home sharpening their knives those nights because I gave them plenty of opportunities in the early 2000s.

My kids aren’t old enough yet to have questions about drugs and alcohol, but they have already seen one of of my dumb young kid decisions — my tattoos. I have two: one on my hip done by a mostly blind one armed man in Glasgow, Scotland; and a tramp stamp done for my bisexual boyfriend who got me started smoking and cheated on me with a girl he met at church. What can I say, I like my life stories with a dash of ”what the……..??” to them.

The first time my daughter saw my tattoos, I told her they were bruises. I don’t know, dudes. She was two. Now that she is four, I have told her that they are pictures that never go away called tattoos. She of course, decided that she would like a tattoo as well. I told her that once she turned 18 she was welcome to do whatever she wanted to. And I mean that. Just please lord, let it be below the neck.

Her question about my tattoos was the first of what will be countless experiences being asked questions I not only don’t know HOW to answer but I don’t WANT to answer. The “where do babies come from” question is starting to get asked, and I always said that I would be straight forward and honest and tell them the truth. Well, guess whose kids think they started out as seeds that I then wished into my tummy? That’s right. THIS idiot’s kids. Just another promise I made myself before having kids that did a 180 after I had them (when I was pregnant I also said I would never buy plastic toys. Careful — you’re going to choke if you keep laughing that hard).

So my friends and I worry about what the heck we are going to do when our kids ask us if WE ever did XYZ when WE were teenagers. The experts say — tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, but for the love of god you don’t have to tell them every little thing if they don’t ask about it (ix-nay on the aring-shay). And there have been studies showing that teens want to know the truth and that when they do it encourages them to be more responsible. To which I say, dur-hay. Think about it — wouldn’t you want to know about the time your mom dropped acid and thought she could fly?! I sure as heck would! (ps, Mom, if there is anything you want to share just drop me a line).

But really, who knows if what we did makes one iota of difference to our teenagers? Maybe being honest about my past will help because they will know that if I did it, then drugs and alcohol definitely don’t make you cool. To which I say, excellent. I just want them to make it through the horror show called the teenaged years alive and healthy and only lightly scarred. I know experimentation is going to happen, I just hope that they think I’m lame enough to not want to use my past as a role model. And I can proudly say that I am well on my way to accomplishing that.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to take my kids to the grocery store in a shirt with holes in it and sandals with socks. Sometimes they play the Miami Vice theme in the store, and oh, how I dance.
This little gem was sent in by Amit, and is just too good to pass.

As the story goes, this girl wanted to write "I love XXX" (boyfriend's name) in Hebrew and tried to accomplish the task using Babylon translation software.

Well, if you read this site, you know where this is leading...

What does this Hebrew Tattoo read?
"Babylon is the world's leading dictionary and translation software"

Oh yeah, THAT bad.

Remember boys and girls, never use an automatic/online translator, and especially if you're translating a name. Sadly, this effort was doomed from the start.
Strength? You'll Need It!
Today's victim really did try. She even asked an Israeli friend to provide the correct translation for her Hebrew tattoo, but to no avail. Tattoos done in Hebrew just have a special way of always going wrong...

This Hebrew tattoo, which was discovered and sent in by Leor, is supposed to say "Lord give me strength". I have to admit, it is grammatically correct. Out poor victim made the mistake of trying to render it vertically, though, all by herself. Bad idea!

Below is how "Lord give me strength" is supposed to be written in Hebrew. They're the exact same words as in the tat. Can you spot what went wrong?

Mistake #1: This Hebrew tattoo is backwards. Unlike English, Hebrew is written right-to-left, so the rightmost letter should be on top, in a vertical tattoo.

Mistake #2: Letter Yod is not an apostrophe! Yod is the shortest letter, but it's still a letter, and as such, it deserves its own line when written vertically. In this tattoo, all Yods have to share their living space with other letters :(

Mistake #3: Some letters were replaced by other, similar looking letters. So you can very well read the word "Ten" (give) as "Chen" (grace), and you can read "Koach" (strength) as either "Noach" (comfy) or "Moach" (brain). Yeah, this tattoo could absolutely be read as "Lord give me brains".

Vertical Hebrew tattoos? Kids, don't do them!
Gnome In Natural Habitat
Sometimes, Hebrew tattoos can be all too funny. Take this cute scene, that was forwarded here by Reut, as a prime example:

The tattoo reads in Hebrew as "Gamad", which translates to Gnome.

Why did he do it? No idea! Most likely it's a misspelling, though there's always the possibility that this is a die-hard role-playing geek, taking his character one step too far. The photo shoot setting certainly fits!
There's Something Lacking...
Today's victim was going for a spiritual ring tattoo. She wanted "Mercy" tattooed in Hebrew on her finger, but I guess God had other plans...

There's just a tiny incorrectness in one of the Hebrew letters. A small lack of a line, and this tattoo spells not "Mercy" but "Lack" or "Absence".

See, Mercy in Hebrew is "Chesed", but turn the letter Dalet into a Resh, and you've ended up with "Cheser", which means something else entirely. I like how it is still a real Hebrew word, though.

Dalet and Resh are very similar, aren't they?

Luckily for this woman, her tattoo is very easy to fix. Just add a tiny protrusion to that Resh, and she's back in the righteousnesses business.

Now, this is how "Chesed", which means Mercy and also Grace in Hebrew, is written:
Statue Comes to (Misspelled) Life
This is a statue. It resides in The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and spells out Ahava (Love in Hebrew), somewhat artistically.

The design became famous, and can be found in Hebrew jewelry and tattoos all over. Incorrect to one degree or another, usually. In an older entry we saw this same design mangled beyond all recognition. In this one, you can tell what it's supposed to be, but it is still misspelled.

It doesn't spell out Ahava, but rather Achbach, which really means nothing in Hebrew.

See, many Hebrew letters are very similar in appearance. For example He, which produces the HA and the last A in Ahava, is quite similar to Chet, which makes a CH sound. The statue has borderline rendition of the letter He, but the tattoo totally crossed that border.

In the Hebrew language, every little stroke can turn your chosen letter into something else entirely.

Want your Hebrew "Ahava" (Love) statue-like tattoo correct? This is How you'd write it in proper Hebrew. It's really supposed to be all in one line, but we're being artistic, yeah?
The Daddygirl Has No Need For Grammar
Today we have a Hebrew tattoo of something unusual, the Daddygirl. I guess Daddygirls happen when men who have children undergo sex transformation?

Well, here's one of these rare creatures, boasting her trans-gendered fatherly pride, ink on flesh:

In reality, this victim was going for an innocent "Daddy's Little Girl" tattoo in Hebrew, but somehow lost the word "little", the proper grammar of a sentence, and the spaces too.

In fact, all that remains are the words "Girl" and "Daddy" mashed together, and so the Daddygirl is born!

Want a proper "Daddy's Little Girl" Hebrew translation for your tattoo? This is how it's supposed to be written:
Her Name was Lost in Rotation
When I first saw this tattoo, I thought it wasn't Hebrew writing at all. It looks like some weird script, Martian maybe?

The victim claims this Hebrew-like doodle to be her name, and on closer inspection I realized that it really was. It just so happened that when trying to render her tattoo vertically, some letters were rotated and some were not, creating this very strange result.

I never had to draw this particular chart before:

In any case, the Hebrew tattoo most likely says "Ebony Eve". Most likely, since aside from being mis-rotated, it's also slightly misspelled. So if you have another interpretation of this name, I'd love to hear it!

And this is how you would correctly write "Ebony Eve" in Hebrew. Ebony on the right, Eve is on the left.

My suggestion, when it comes to words which have letters of different height, is not to rotate it letter by letter. It just doesn't look nice.

Want your Hebrew tattoo to be vertical? Just turn the whole thing 90 degrees counter-clockwise. Like this:

Yeah, bad tattoos are basically a bummer, right? But they're also pretty much a rite of passage for bored and disenfranchised-feeling teenagers the world over. At least it was for about 95% of the people I know. Going to a reputable tattoo shop and getting a wizard or unicorn drilled into your lower back is totally fine, but nothing really takes the place of sitting around with a bunch of friends and some beers, enthusiastically taking turns poking each others' arms full of bad ideas-which actually is fun at any age.

It's easy-anyone can do it (even teenagers, who, according to recent scientific tests, don't even have fully functional brains). You probably already have all the materials you need at your disposal, and best of all nothing shows true fortitude of character quite like learning to live with a bad decision.

Here's what you'll need:
1) Sewing needles, not too big and not too little. Get a bunch.
2) Thread (one spool, stolen from your roommate's sewing kit).
3) A pencil or some such shaped object (this will be the handle for your tattooing needle).
4) India ink-black liquid acrylic (you can use other colors too, but I'd suggest sticking with basic black for now).
5) A razor (if you're especially hairy)
6) A thin-tipped marker. 0.05mm Rapidographs work fine. But a regular pen works too; you just want something that marks skin fairly well.
7) Clean hands, relatively free from tremors, open wounds, or Parkinson's Disease.
8) A willingness to see things through to their conclusion.
9) Enough booze to keep things interesting.

To start with, assemble all your supplies on your work surface.

Wait, on second thought, let's include one more thing in the photo:

Being neat isn't required, but my OCD makes me have to arrange everything at right angles to everything else. Disregarding neatness, let me caution you about one thing: blood-borne disease.

Ask yourself before starting: Do I know this person I'm going to tattoo? Am I relatively certain that this person does not have a disease I do not want to contract (and vice-versa)?

There will be a little blood, so it's best to be cautious. Again, don't have any open wounds on your hands (or wear latex gloves like professionals do, you pussy). Just try your best to keep things clean. By which I mean: Wash. Wash your hands. Scrub them down. And oh yeah, for the love of god, use a new needle for each person getting tattooed, okay?

Then take the needles you plan on using (remember: a new needle for every person getting a tattoo) and put them in a pan filled with a bit of boiling water and boil the hell right out of them. Once they're boiled and relatively germ free, handle them carefully.

Oh man, I forgot one incredibly important component to successful home tattooing: music. Music sets the mood. If you choose your music carefully, you'll create the proper ambience for the evening's activity.

Necessary albums include (but are not limited to):
The Rolling Stones-Tattoo You (obvious choice)
The Rolling Stones-Let It Bleed (put this on halfway through the first tattoo)
Thin Lizzy-Black Rose (this dude from Belgium who's staying on my couch had never heard Thin Lizzy before, which obviously had to be corrected immediately. And plus, lots of people get rose tattoos. Speaking of which, why not go ahead and put on some Rose Tattoo?)

Okay, now we're going to move on to actually constructing your rig. Take one of the boiled needles and with a whole bunch of thread carefully attach it to your handle (pencil, paintbrush, etc.).

Don't go trying to insert the eye-end of the needle in the pencil's eraser; that just doesn't work. What you're trying to do is fasten the needle securely to the pencil-once it's on there, you don't want that needle to budge. Leaving off about 1/2 inch of the tip of the needle, wrap the remaining bit of it tightly to your handle. Wrap it over and over and over. Then keep winding because the thread needs to cover almost the entire needle, pretty much right up to the point.

This is where neatness counts. You don't want a big ball of thread rolled all willy-nilly around your needle dripping ink everywhere, so when wrapping just the needle (not the handle) only give it one or two layers of thread. Wrap everything except for the last 1/16th of an inch. Definitely don't leave anymore than 1/8th of an inch showing. The purpose of the thread is to hold the ink. When stabbing the needle repeatedly into someone's flesh, the thread needs to come into contact with the skin so that the ink can get in there. If you leave too much of the needle tip unwrapped, you'll have to stab really deep and nobody wants that. Seriously, I can't stress this enough: leave just a tiny bit of needle showing. You'll thank me later.

Once you've got that out of the way, you may want to disinfect the needle one more time before plunging it into anyone. If you're like me and don't own a hospital-grade autoclave, just use your lighter. Just remember to let the needle cool down before you get to work, otherwise you'll brand your friend instead of giving them a tattoo, and everyone knows that branding is retarded.

Doesn't it look like I'm about to smoke some crack in that second photo? Also, don't pay any attention to those finger tattoos, 'cause they're not homemade.

This is pretty much all you're going to need. Well, a couple of paper towels too. But that's it. Once your rig is finished, you'll need to decide on a tattoo. Get everyone together and start drawing. Remember, these are homemade tattoos and as such they will lack the finery of shop-bought tattoos. Unless you've got all the time in the world and a high tolerance for pain, steer clear of things like shading, coloring, straight lines, and realistic portraits. Keep the tattoo small, not only for practicality's sake but because nobody wants to see your full sleeve of pointillist nightmares.

So, ideas... keeping in mind the above caveats: go nuts. Seriously, make yourself a little masterpiece. The dumber the better. Dare your friends to get the worst tattoo you can imagine. Draw up a few pages of bad ideas. A good rule of thumb for homemade tattoos is that if everyone in the room laughs at the drawing, someone should probably get it. Also, another good rule is that if you tattoo someone, you have to suck it up and let them tattoo you afterwards.

Here are our ideas:

Jesse wanted either a cactus, a stegosaurus, or a dagger.

Nobody stepped up to the Herpes Heart, though.
My name is Evan Olin. I enjoy taking my classical art background and applying it to my tattoos. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. My tattoos often take on a painterly/ realistic style. Some of my favorite subjects include: anything dark or horror related, wildlife/ animals, portraits, and anything else I can render in a realistic or illustrational way. My goal is to deliver one- of-a-kind tattoos that my customers can be proud to wear and show off for the rest of their lives.
I have been tattooing in several Rhode Island tattoo studios since 2003. I attended Rhode Island College, and hold a Master's Degree in Art Education. Shaping impressionable young minds since 1997, I also teach art at West Warwick High School. While I have experience tattooing in a wide variety of techniques, I feel my strength lies in my illustrative style, which fuses realism with inventive physics and questionable secondary lighting. Think Dr. Seuss meets John Audobon. Or Salvadore Dali sitting on Norman Rockwell’s lap.
Although I’ve been creating visual designs since my days with Crayola crayons and macaroni art, it took me a while to find out that skin was the canvas that allowed me to best display my distinctive and original perspective pieces. Throughout my schooling I cultivated my abilities in the creative arts, it wasn't until a few years back that I realized that my true passion lies in the art of tattooing and wasn't until 2011 when I could make it my profession. While I enjoy most styles of tattoo, from lettering and black work to bright and vibrant color pieces, my professional focus is on illustrative and animated perspective point-of-view imagery. I love to take an object and twist it, creating an unusual and dynamic perspective with the illusion of space and depth. By concentrating on line weight, light sources, and focal points, I can use perspective technique to create a completely original work of art. (And given some paste and construction paper, I can still make one bad-ass macaroni snowman.)
Into art since I was a little Rhode Island tyke, I've always read comics, studied art and watched a lot of movies. Mutants, monsters and all types of creatures fascinated me - Fast forward 20 some years, not much has changed. Taking 2 years of fine arts courses at Rhode Island College, and sharpening the focus to Illustration at the Art Institute of Boston definitely helped further my love for, and skills in art. After a few years of kicking around trying to find an apprenticeship, I landed in the right place in New Haven, CT - where I've been tattooing for the last 5 years professionally. Now, I'm bringing it back to RI, at Powerline Tattoo! I try to be versatile in my tattooing, working in full color, black and grey, or fusing the two.. Some of my favorite things to tattoo, are creepy critters, frogs, birds, trees, bio-mechanical/organics and just about anything illustrative! I'm heavily influenced by many different types of art, and try to combine parts of all of them into what I tattoo. I like to put my own little twist to everything I do, and try my best to exceed clients expectations!
<> I’ve always been drawing, but it wasn’t until college that I realized I was pretty effing good at it. I started off at Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota FL, bounced around to a few places, including Boston, and returned home to Rhode Island and graduated with a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design (Class of ’05 with Evan). I took the Fine Art Painting route for a little while, showing my oil paintings at local galleries and doing commissioned work. I didn’t actually get into tattooing until a few years after leaving school. I may have been a little late to the game, but I caught on pretty quick, and completed an apprenticeship. I learned a lot, but kind of went my own way with things; applying my painting and color technique and adding what some may call a softer, more feminine touch to my tattoos. I love realism, and very colorful subject matter, such as: flowers, pin-ups, animals, etc. Art Nouveau has recently been a huge influence on my work as well, and I tend to incorporate many of its elements in my work. I’m definitely a fan of soft realistic black and gray work, but my passion lies in color. I also enjoy pastry, candy, and baked goods (to paint , tattoo, and eat--its kind of my thing). Also, rollerskating and long walks on the beach at sunset…
I've been tattooing locally in Rhode Island for nearly 10 years. I consider myself lucky enough to have been working with and learning from some of the top artists in the state.

I feel a tattoo should be clean, readable, and made to last. Because of that, I hope to give my clients a unique custom piece and a good tattoo experience.

Stylistically my work has an illustrative lean with elements from japanese tattooing, but I enjoy all styles from black and gray, bio mechanical, new school, etc.

You can find me at the studio every day except mondays and

I’m co-owner of PowerLine Tattoo with my husband, Evan. I am the business yin to his creative yang. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Foodservice Entrepreneurship, so use my business knowledge to manage PowerLine. I’ve been with Evan for several years, and share his passion for the art and am extremely knowledgeable about tattooing, though my artistic abilities lie in the kitchen. Working together at the shop allows Evan to focus on his art and the creative aspect of the shop, while I handle the “businessy” duties, along with keeping the shop impeccably clean, and always a comfortable and welcoming environment. It’s rare to walk into the shop and not be greeted by me. You’ll quickly learn that I’m totally devoted to the shop and most of all, our clients. Sometimes you just need a woman around to keep things in line ;)
Looking for the most perfect tattoo design? Wondering where you'll get
it? Really planning to stand out in the crowd? Well, if the answer to
all these questions is in affirmative, then my reply to your next
question is also in affirmative. Wondering what I mean by that? It's
simple, really – you must have asked if I knew how to provide you with
the perfect tattoo for you, and hence, my answer to that is yes, I do.
One of the most perfect and infallible tattoo designs present in the
world of body art is the Chinese tattoo design.

Not only will
these tattoo designs make you feel special and unique, they will also
present you with innumerable possibilities when it comes to size,
pattern, color and placement of the tattoo. Let us begin with the first
aspect – the size of your tattoo. If you are one of those bold,
extrovert creatures of the human species, then you would do well to
flaunt a special Chinese tattoo design which is quite large in size. On
the other hand, if you are afraid to do so, or cannot due to some reason
or the other, then you would feel more at ease with a small Chinese
tattoo design.

Next comes the pattern that you choose for your
tattoo. It can be your or your beloved's name in the Chinese language,
or a message that you wish to broadcast to the world, making them aware
of your beliefs and ideas. It can also be just a single character –
whatever you wish. It depends on you really, whether you want something
more meaningful or showy. So that is another thing you have got to
decide on. Next is the color combination of the Chinese tattoo design.
You can either have a monochromic black or any other color, or you can
have many colors incorporated in your tattoo. I'm not very sure about
adding too much color to this particular type of design, but then if it
appeals to you, then you should get it inked right away.

Last,
but definitely not the least, comes the placement of your Chinese tattoo
design – where you wish to display it on your body. If you want to show
it off all the time, then good areas will be the upper arm, chest,
lower back, neck, or actually wherever you want it to be. The best part
about this type of tattoo designs is that they are very highly versatile
– they can be placed at almost any place, according to the wearer's
wish, and can be made smaller or larger, again according to their fancy.

So
if you are looking for the most versatile of tattoo designs, you have
the answer right in front of your eyes – Chinese tattoo designs. So go
ahead and get one printed as soon as you can, but see to it that you
choose the right pattern for yourself, because tattoos are permanent,
and getting one etched on your
With last week's double shot of Inkmaster's second season (two episodes for the price of one!) and Tattoo Rescue, you'd think we'd be rolling toward Tattoo Reality Overlord. Although it appears Tattoo Rescue was a one-off pilot, we will now get a new series premiering tonight after Inkmaster.

For those in the tattoo industry who think that "reality" shows exploit their industry and that no new tattoo shows is a good thing, they will likely cringe at the title of Tattoo Nightmares.

But, similar to a TLC series I spotted over the summer called America's Worst Tattoos, the new series highlights artists who are trying to correct tattoos gone bad.

As their press release touts:

"Real people with really bad tattoos, ranging from hilarious to downright disturbing, seek the help of three of the best cover-up artists in the business to fix them – Tommy Helm, Big Gus and Jasmine Rodriguez. The stakes are high as the regretful clients ... see if the artists at Tattoo Nightmares can work a miracle and turn their disaster pieces into masterpieces. Reenactments allow us to see how the bad ink was born."

The way I see it, you're either a fan of these types of reality shows, or you're almost violently against them. Personally, I'm a tattoo half-full guy. For the most part, these shows are entertaining - just on the basis that they are legitimately trying to show a positive side to tattoos.

One of the three artists behind Tattoo Nightmares is New York's Tommy Helm, who was one of the three finalists in the first season of Inkmaster. He's a top-notch artist, so I'll give the show a chance based on that alone.

Tommy Helm is one of the biggest reasons to watch Tattoo Nightmares
Look, when show's like Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo draws millions of viewers, it seems silly to complain about a tattoo reality program that celebrates an art form and arguably helps the tattoo business. The same people who complain about these shows are likely also going to be taking appointments from clients who are inspired by these "tattoo nightmares" and seeking high-quality cover-ups.
An apprenticeship is the basis for a great tattoo career. They are not easy to do, not easy to get, not easy to prepare for, not easy to pay for. But all of this is for a reason. This hub will help you learn the ups and downs, pros and cons of getting a tattoo apprenticeship and how to go about getting one.

Please note: Feel free to contact me with questions by clicking the 'Contact Me' button. I will respond as soon as I can!

PLEASE NOTE: The purpose of the article is to help educate and guide you in your journey to becoming a tattoo artist. Every shop and teacher will be different, but what follows is a good jumping off point to knowing what to expect.
Most of all: DO NOT TATTOO UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR APPRENTICESHIP!
There are many reasons why you absolutely need an apprenticeship, but the one that people tend to forget: Apprenticeships are not only a crucial training period, they are a right of passage. Show respect for this community and those who have earned the right to tattoo.

An apprenticeship is what a potential tattoo artist (and piercers) have to go through to become a professional artist. Think of it as earning your wings. Here are the basic steps.

1. Building a portfolio

First and foremost, do not walk into a shop with a portfolio of actual tattoos you've done. This is absolutely unacceptable for several reasons. One, you don't have any idea what you are doing. Two, you can cause irreparable damage to the person you tattoo. Three, that artist will have to take time to not only teach you the right way to tattoo, but wean you off 'scratcher' habits. Bottomline: You should NOT be tattooing unless you have been trained by a licensed professional. Never. No exceptions.

A portfolio consists of 50 to 200 drawings. This means COMPLETED and COLORED. You don't want to walk into the shop with a sketch book full of doodles and half complete ideas. Choose only your best work, what you feel best showcases your talent. Portfolios should be in an actual portfolio, placed and matted in sheet protectors. Choose a portfolio that looks professional, don't just use a three ring binder. Presentation is all about showing how professional and serious you are about getting your apprenticeship.

As far as drawings go, you want to have a wide array of work. Draw things that people usually get tattooed and some of your own creative ideas for tattoos. DO NOT copy other artists work. If that's your idea of tattooing, then you had better find a different career. If you are having a hard time deciding what to draw, think of different life experiences that people would get tattooed. Tattoos are all about commemorating a time in your life, remembering something/someone or simply for adornment reasons. In your career you will constantly be doing these kind of tattoos. Ask your friends what they would get tattooed and draw it. There's no better way to prepare yourself than to talk to people who may be your potential clients someday.

Draw everyday. Make every drawing your best. Don't give up on an idea just because its too hard or boring because you will not always have a choice when it comes to tattooing. Again, all drawings must be complete. Color them using your choice of medium. Watercolor/Ink is widely thought to be the most similar to actually tattooing.

2. Finding a Shop

Find a shop with a good reputation. You want to learn from someone who actually wants to teach you, has a good educational background, and who will challenge you. This person is responsible for helping you learn the basics and some of their own tricks for tattooing so you want the best. Apprenticeships will cost you from nothing to around $5,000+, so you will want to make it worth your while.

Persistence is absolutely key in this process. If possible, get tattooed by the artist you want to learn from. Even better, get tattooed as much as possible (there are many reasons for this advice). Hang out in the shop, if they'll let you. Even volunteering your time there can help you build a relationship with the artists there.

3. The Apprenticeship

When you get an apprenticeship, prepare to be what they call the 'shop bitch'. You don't get paid and you do all the dirty work. Take care of the trash, set up/break down stations, make sure they're stocked, sweeping, run errands, etc. Chances are for awhile that's all you'll be doing. They do this to make sure you're actually interested in doing the job, to weed out the unworthy. So take these tasks as an honor. You're lucky to be there! So act that way. And don't wait to be asked to do these things, just do them.

When you start learning, you will do a lot of watching. You will sit and watch several tattoos being done. Stay attentive. The best way to learn is through watching. You will learn how to make needles, use the autoclave, and all the health precautions to be taken (including blood borne pathogen certification). After, you will start learning to use the tattoo machine (NEVER call it a gun!). At first, you will tattoo on fake skin, fruit and maybe even yourself, depending on your teacher. You will learn about all the different set ups for the machines, the difference between liners and shaders, etc. You will also have to keep drawing, learn how to draw things quickly and well. Its a LOT of hard work so don't get discouraged. Apprenticeships can take 6 months to 2 years, so plan accordingly.

4. Becoming a Tattoo Artist

You will do around 100 tattoos for free during your apprenticeship. But free tattoos mean that YOU will pay for them. So make sure to have a lot of money saved up for supplies. You can tattoo friends, family, whomever you wish. After that, you will possibly tattoo some clients at the shop.

Then the time will come you take your test to become certified. You absolutely need to take this test or you will be risking your reputation and possibly get into some trouble with the law.

Once you've passed your test, you may start tattooing and charging for it! So Congratulations! You've made it.

5. Professional Work

Generally, the shop you learned to tattoo at will have you on contract for at least a year after you've completed your apprenticeship. Keep working hard, take pictures of every tattoo you do, add these to a new portfolio. After your contract is up, you may choose to stay at your home shop or you may find a different shop. A huge part of your work is networking. A large portion of the work you get will be through word of mouth, so get to know other artists, collectors, etc. Go to conventions! Put yourself out there, don't let yourself become complacent. You are responsible for your success at this point, no more coddling or hand holding. Go for it! Your future is yours to shape.
Chris Brown and Rihanna turned heads recently when they both showed off new tattoos, which happen to be on identical locations on their bodies. But what really struck a nerve with observers was Brown's mysterious neck tattoo of what appears to be a battered woman.

Although many assume it represents Rihanna, Brown's ex-girlfriend whom he physically assaulted after the Grammys in 2009, his rep released a statement addressing the tattoo. "His tattoo is a sugar skull (associated with the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead) and a MAC cosmetics design he saw," the rep said. "It is not Rihanna or an abused woman as erroneously reported."

And so, in keeping with Brown's misadventures in tattooing, let's take a look at other celebrities and their unfortunate ink.
Bad Tattoos Pictures Biography

Source (google.com.pk)
He was born Donald Edmond Wahlberg, Jr. on August 17, 1969 in
Dorchester Massachusetts, into a Swedish/Irish-Catholic family, the
eighth of nine children of Donald Sr. and Alma Wahlberg. His parents
eventually divorced and Donnie, finding himself already in trouble,
found a positive outlet performing in school plays and became involved
in varied aspects of theater -- acting, writing, and directing. At the
age of 15, he became a member of the teen vocal group originally called
"NYNUK." Donnie's younger brother, Mark Wahlberg, was originally one of the Boys but balked at the direction the group was taking and backed out.

Following a false start with their debut
album "New Kids on the Block," the teens persevered with a sophomore
record and proceeded to hit #1 with the single "Please Don't Go Girl" in
1988. They continued to bombard the market with one-after-another "Top
Ten" hits including "The Right Stuff" and "I'll Be Loving You Forever."
Leaving the young girls panting for more, they became one of the hottest
young singing/line-dancing groups to hit the late 80s/early 90s. The
Boys went on to sell over 70 million albums worldwide, and provoke the
spawning of other five-member harmony groups such as Backstreet Boys and
*NSYNC. During its heyday, Donnie played up his resident "bad boy"
persona by tallying up several run-ins with the law, including an
alleged arson at a Kentucky hotel (charges were dropped). He also delved
into "body art" with numerous tattoos and body piercings in an effort
to buck their already-cloying image. Amid intergroup dissension and
Milli Vanilli-like charges of not contributing all the vocals to their
albums, the pop band finally disbanded in 1994 -- partly out of
frustration but also having outgrown the group's juvenile moniker.

Unsure
of his direction while attracting more trouble in the tabloids, Donnie,
who helped write, arrange and produce brother Mark's Funky Bunch
group's first two albums a few years earlier, switched gears. He rapped
some and modeled some, then transformed himself into an actor, a route
taken earlier by his talented bro. While Mark has turned out to become
the bigger film star over the years, Donnie has stepped out of his
shadows to receive raves and renewed respect for his own tense and
compelling character work.

He first showed up in big screen action. Making his debut as a "tough guy" thug in the Mickey Rourke urban outing Bullet
(1996), the filmed was made in 1994 but not released until two years
later. Usually cast as an amoral heavy, Donnie moved up the quality
ladder with director Ron Howard's thriller Ransom (1996) as part of a gang of kidnappers who nab Mel Gibson's son, to their eventual regret, of course. His next repellent took the form of a drug dealer in the goth indie horror Black Circle Boys (1997), but the film came and went. After a couple of TV movies, he finally nabbed a starring role in the film Southie
(1998) playing more or less himself as an Irish-American prodigal son
who returns to the mean streets of his native Boston. The movie also
featured another brother Robert Wahlberg who also was testing the acting waters.

Ironically,
one of Donnie's most powerful roles during this period was also one of
his briefest. Seen in the opening sequence, he is nearly unrecognizable
(having dropped an alarming amount of weight) portraying a deranged
former patient of psychiatrist Bruce Willis whose sudden explosion into unfathomable violence sets up the clever twists and turns that turned M. Night Shyamalan's classic psychological thriller The Sixth Sense
(1999) into a critically-acclaimed box office hit. Donnie's opening bit
was mouth dropping and jarring in its horror. He also proved he wasn't a
flash in the pan by backing up this perf with a major role as a WWII
paratrooper in the critically-hailed ten-part epic "Band of Brothers" (2001), which won multiple Emmy awards (6).

This TV role directly led to his casting as a gritty L.A. detective in the NBC dramatic series "Boomtown"
(2002), an acclaimed series that didn't survive a second season. Since
then Donnie has patented his unrefined intensity into a number of other
films such as Triggermen (2002) and Saw II
(2005). He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Kim Fey, and
sons Xavier and Elijah. As a former teen heartthrob seemingly headed
down a troubled and dangerous path after his initial success, he somehow
managed to avoid the traditional pitfalls of drugs and self-destruction, and has since proven himself an actor with "the right stuff."
Was always seen as the free-spirited, more earthy urban member of New Kids on the Block.
Originally
called "Nynuk", the boy group eventually settled on the name New Kids
On The Block after a rap song that Donnie had written for their debut
album, which flopped upon initial release. However, the album would
eventually sell over four million in response to the group's later
popularity.
Donnie produced, arranged, mixed and co-wrote "Music
for the People" and "You Gotta Believe" the 1991 and 1992 hit albums
from brother Mark's group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch - which
included a #1 hit with "Good Vibrations" and a multi-platinum album for
the former. He also worked on the successful 1999 solo releases for
NKOTB's Joey McIntyre and Jordan Knight.
In
1999, during the teen pop revival, MTV tried to reunite the group and
get them to perform on that years VMA's. All members were on board,
except Jonathan - and so the performance didn't happen. In 2003, another
attempt to coerce each of the boys to reunite was made for a one-night
performance for the show "VH1's Bands Reunited." Jonathan this time
agreed, as did Jordan - but Donnie, Joe and Danny all declined.
Wahlberg is current developing a TV project that would tell the teen band's story from his own point of view.
His first movie Bullet (1996) with Mickey Rourke and late rap artist Tupac Shakur
was deemed too bad to release, but was eventually given life after the
surging rise of interest following Tupac's shooting death in September
of 1996.
Is of Swedish, Irish, German and French Canadian descent.
In 2008, discovered to be a distant relative (through Madonna) to

Personal Quotes
[following the Boston Marathon bombings] In the past few months I've
discovered something different about Boston. Everyone can celebrate in
times of glory, but when something horrific happens, when something
unspeakable happens, that's not when cities come together, that's when
families come together. And I think we've shown the world that we are
just not one of the greatest cities on earth, we are one of the greatest
families on the face of this Earth.
From ill-fated drunken decisions to a heroin addict artist, are these America's worst tattoos?
From a droopy 'cookie monster' drawn by a heroin addict, to the incorrectly spelled word, 'literacy,' a new programme will showcase one of the biggest regrets in life, a meaningless tattoo.

America's Worst Tattoos features grammatically-incorrect mottos, ugly image misprints and unfortunate impulse decisions in a new, one-hour special.

The TLC programme, which premieres next Thursday, reveals the back story to each ill-fated tattoo, and the labour-intensive process of finally having them covered up with a transformation artist.
Loves food: David overheard someone refer to their mother as 'well fed' at a party, and thought it was genius, but now he says he 'loathes' it

Ryan from Michigan wanted the motto 'Art is Literacy of the Heart,' tattooed on his lower stomach.

He explained, however that he was horrified when he learned 'Literacy' had been spelled with an 'e' instead of a 'c'.

'I didn't realise myself, but my friend Carson said it was spelled wrong. I was like "You're kidding!" I got really upset, I was like, "I can't believe this is spelled wrong," I can not think of a worse word to be spelled wrong,' he said.
Error in judgement: America's Worst Tattoos can be transformed, such as this skeleton with a chef's hat (left) created by Megan Massacre. This misdrawn 'moon face' (right) Ms Massacre will transform on the show

Another victim of a bad tattoo decision is David, who got 'Well Fed' placed on his stomach.

He explained: 'I overheard someone refer to their mother as 'well fed' at a party, I thought it was genius. So I got 'Well Fed' tattooed on my stomach.

'I loathe it. The 'Well Fed' is placed on my stomach like a cholo mustache - off to the side, nothing in the middle. So i got the post-it note [Put Food in me] in the middle to fill that space.'

'People gawk and laugh at it, it was a big mistake,' he said.
Grammatically incorrect: Ryan wanted the motto 'Art is Literacy of the Heart,' tattooed on his lower stomach, and was horrified when he learned 'Literacy' had been spelled with an 'e' instead of a 'c'

One girl, who made a decision to get a 'moon face' tattooed on her lower back while heavily under the influence of alcohol, received a misdrawn image that she now calls the 'cookie monster'.

She said sarcastically: 'I was intoxicated, so that made the situation ever better.

'She finished, and, oh my god, it's disgusting.'

She disturbingly added: 'Then I found out she was a heroin addict and apparently she wasn't high enough for me - they say when she's really high she does a really great job, so I must have caught her when she was, "eh".

NY INK’s tattoo artist Megan Massacre also appears on the show, transforming the unfortunate tattoos into 'masterpieces'.

'A lot of times when people want tattoos covered up, it reminds them of something they don't want to think about,' she said.

'So having to wear that on their body every day really brings them down as a person. I believe when we are able to cover the tattoo with something that is more positive, that they can look at and be happy about...it can really transform a person.'
You can find me at the studio every day except mondays and
Saturdays.
Everything on this page was Written by Kris Howes, from over 10 years Tattooing Experience & Knowledge.
These are MY Aftercare Instructions, MY Opinions, and MY way of helping you heal your Tattoos.

~ Every Tattoo Artist will recomend different Healing Instructions for their Tattoos. Truth is, every Artist knows how their
Tattoo Style will Heal in Skin. Different Artists use Different Needle
Types, different methods, different machines, different Inks,
Ointments, Etc. Best thing to do, is a combination of what the Artist
Recomends for that particular Tattoo, and trying out methods/ointments
on your own. The more you get Tattooed, the more you'll know how to
heal it.

~ Some Tattoos just have problems healing, especially
in certain areas. Here at INK! we offer 1 Free touch-up to our Tattoos,
as needed, but only if we know the Tattoo just didn't heal right,
slightly faded, or holidays, we will touch it up to perfection. We will
be able to tell if the Tattoo did not heal because of improper
aftercare.

QUICK TIPS FOR AFTER CARE

At INK! we Recomend A&D Ointment & Udderly Smooth Lotion. Or AquaPhor.
~Keep Your Tattoo Clean ~ Warm Water & Pat Dry with Fresh Clean Towel
~Do Not keep it Covered for long periods of time.
~Keep Ointment on for First 3 Days, Every 4 to 5 hours; Clean, Apply Very Thin Coats & Wash before Recoating
~Switch to White Unscented Lotion After 3/4 Day, After Peeling begins, Apply 8 to 10 Times a Day.
~Showering Daily & Cleaning them before re-applying ointment is the best care for new Tattoos!

What To Expect During Your Tattoo…
*Pre Tattoo -You will have fill out a Form asking personal information, Provide ID, Medical History, etc
-The work station, tables, chairs, etc. will be clean & sterilized before you enter the work area.
-The Artist will wait for the client to be present before opening sterile packages.
-Your skin will be properly cleaned, then an image or transfer of your design will be placed on your skin.
*During Tattoo -You will feel a slight discomfort, called…Pain!
*The first line in usually the worst, especially for first timers.
*Try to keep your mind & body relaxed, keep your breathing steady & slow!
-Speak Up! If your feeling nauseated, light headed, a cramped muscle, cough, or a sneeze, etc
*After -After your Tattoo is finished, your Artist will thoroughly clean your skin, then apply
vitamins/ointments and cover your fresh tattoo with plastic/gauze to avoid infection.
-Your new Tattoo is an open wound! Treat it as one!

Taking Care Of Your Tattoo…
*Directly after leaving the Tattoo Shop…
-Leave your Tattoo covered for an hour or two. It’s covered for a reason! But do not leave it covered!!
Cover will allow your skin to finish bleeding out, and let the new open
pores close up, to avoid infections & contamination.
CLEANING YOUR TATTOO *WASH YOUR HANDS, Always wash properly before touching your new tattoo!
-Wet your Tattoo with warm water, use antibacterial soap & water and delicately rub/wash the whole tattoo.
-Don’t scrub it, or rub to hard. If you peel off a scabbed area, you could damage the ink underneath.
-Rinse off completely, and lightly pat dry with a fresh clean towel.
-After washing/drying, apply a thin coat of ointment to whole Tattoo (Recomend A&D, AD&E, or Generic Neosporin)
*DO NOT LET IT GET DRIED OUT, Keep it lubed!
*1st Day/Night -Keep it clean, but leave it alone!!! Don’t clean it to much, don’t touch it more than needed.
-Wash it 3 to 5 times a day, whenever it feels necessary. When it’s tight, irritated, dry or flaking off skin.
-Wash it in the shower daily!! Be gentle, avoid direct hard water pressure, and pat dry.
-Covering your tattoo the first night is optional, recommended for bigger or full color pieces.
-Coat with thin layer of ointment, cover with plastic wrap. Do
not use Gauze or anything that will bond with the Tattoo. Do only at
night or while needed, It will give a layer between the Ink and
blankets, and reduces friction & drying out the tattoo. No not
leave covered for excessive amounts of time which will allow sweating,
chaffing, heat, & bacteria growth.
*First 3 to 4 Days -Use the recommended ointment as instructed above on your new Tattoo for the first 3 or 4 days.
-Wash it, Pat Dry, Lube, and Leave it. If it itches, use a light finger or give it a few pats or light slaps. Gentle!
*For The Next Week -After 3 to 4 days, your top layer of skin should be flaking off similiar to a sun burn.
-This is completely normal. Wash it, Lube it with White UNscented Lotion instead of Ointment, Leave it!
-Important!!! Switch to a casual fragrant free lotion, Don’t use vitamins/ointments anymore.
-You’ll now need to lube your Tattoo more times periodically throughout the day, every few hours.
-WASH YOUR HANDS, and apply the lotion whenever it feels tight, dry, or itchy.
-Don’t use the old fashioned spit it in the hand to lube it up, use some damn lotion!

*IF Your Having Problems With Your Tattoo…
-If Your Tattoo is healing improperly, hurts, or scabbed really
bad, it was probably from complications with aftercare. It could be a
number of things from just minor irritation, acne/pimples, allergic
reactions, or a number of possibilities. Consult your Tattoo Artist
with any questions, and he will provide you with information on how to
correct your problems. If need be, the proper forms to resolve the
situation. Most complications can be healed properly, and touched up to
perfection once again.

Frequently Asked Questions We've Had About Tattoos!

Does a tattoo hurt? Yes… How long will it take to heal? Heals to the Touch usually under 10 to 14 days and you should be good to treat your tattoo as normal skin. The Skin actually takes several months to heal completly. Use lotion often to help aid the skin healing. If my dog licks my tattoo, will it heal faster? No! Besides that, Your dog licks everything. Don’t let it get near your ink!!!
Can I Go in the Sun With my new Tattoo? No!
avoid all direct sunlight on fresh Ink. Try to keep it in the shade.
Clear Ointments and things like Plastic Wrap will intensify the suns
rays and burn your skin easy. Be Careful.
Can I get my tattoo wet? Yes, despite the old day rumors, water isn’t bad for a tattoo. Wash it 3 to 4 times a day. ShowerCan I swim with a fresh tattoo? You
shouldn’t, But if you do, try to wait until after the
scabbing/flaking period. After the 3 or 4 day mark. Swimming in fresh
clean running water only, for a short time isn’t too bad. Avoid chlorine & pools and the salty ocean. Is Bruising or Swelling Bad? Some
people just have semsitive skin, So bruising may occur around or
outside the Tattoo Area, but it shouldn't be that bad and should go away
fast. Swelling, Most Tattoo's swell up during the application and can
remain or re-swell for the next few days. It's pretty normal, keep it
clean, let it run under cold water, soak in ice water if painful.
What can I do when I get a pimple or pimples in or around my tattoo? Could be from many things…shaving, reaction to gloves/ointments/soaps/etc. Chances are if it’s a few to a bunch of little tiny pimples, it’s from shaving and will heal up soon. If
it’s a couple bigger pimples, white heads, it’s probably a reaction
from you putting on ointment too thick, or an allergic reaction to the
ointment. Keep it cleaner, use very small amount of lube and rub it in
good, don’t cover it!
What should I do if I think my tattoo is infected? Honestly,
most
times people think a Tattoo is infected, its really just irritaed. If
it’s infected, it’s probably from bad aftercare, or contact with
something that caused an infection. Most cases, it's not from the
Tattooist. But you should call them and seek advice. Usually it can be
cleared up in a short time, and touched up to perfection. If you think
it's infected, contact the Tattoo Artist personally. He will then give
you instructions on how or what to do, or get the proper medical forms
to treat the Infection. Will the colors in my new Tattoo Bleed Together? With the advancements in Ink & Needles in the past few years, your Tattoo should stay close to what it originally looked like after healing. Granted, future aging and skin growth over the Tattoo will make it fade slightly, the Tattoo, if Done & Taken Care of Properly, should last a lifetime of happiness.

Michael Crippen Asked:I work in a machine shop,
where dust and metal it's everywhere. Mostly my arms get dirty. I have
two new tattoos on my inner arm (forarm, inner bicep). Should I just
wear sleeves or should I wrap it in Saran Wrap and
just let it breath during breaks and reapply ointment??
Kris Howes Answers: If the tattoos aren't to
big, I would cover them with seran wrap. Not to large of a piece, it
could make you sweat. Don't use to much ointment under it. Clean and
change it often. Only cover for a day or 2. (Sometimes it is better to cover a Tattoo to keep out harmful debris. But remember, to much coverage can damage a tattoo as well)

Hezzah Hansin Asked: I am afraid my tattoo may have healed 'tight'. I applied lotion to it
fairly regularly but I feel like it may not have been regular enough in
retrospect. I have other tattoos and none of them healed the same way.
Is there a way I can remedy this?
Kris Howes Answers: Sometimes the tightness goes
away after a while. Skin after being tattooed actually take a couple
months to heal 100%. So if your tattoo is still a little fresh, just
keep using lotion often & give it some healing time.

Tonya Asked: There is an area on my tattoo that is not done correctly. My
artist is a great guy and will fix it. My question is, I tipped him
60.00 for the original, so do I tip him again when he touches it up?
This is not my first go around with tattoos, but I've never had to get
one "fixed" before :-) Thanks so much!
Kris Howes Answers: Every artist charges
differently, the very seldom times I have to touch up a piece, I never
charge cash and don't expect a tip. Sometimes people throw me anywhere
from $5 to $20. The Artist must still use a lot of supplies to do a
touch
up, so something is better than nothing and I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

Amit Ludhwani Asked: i want to make my new tattoo more darker for life time, what can i use
to make darker or suggest any way to make it dark , i am Indian guy my
skin colour is Wheat brown. I am waiting for your valuable feedback
Kris Howes Answers: Hi Amit, as of right now, I do not
know of any method or topical cream that would Darken a Tattoo. The only
way I know how to darken it would be to have it tattooed over again
using a pure & uncut black pigment. Better quality ink always holds
up darker
for a lifetime. Hope this helps?Amit:
Thanks for your email and suggestion. Also i want to ask you how can i
measure the quality of ink and i want it should look black ?

Kris: There's no way to 'measure'
it. But some Artists use water or products to cut the black to its
unpure. Make sure the Artist uses it straight from the bottle to skin
with no alterations. Good brand are millenium, dynamic black, or Fusion
